Oh, look, another new term in the world of fitness. VO2 max may sound complicated but it’s really not.

It’s a number that tells you _the maximum amount of oxygen your body can consume during activity per minute (ml/kg/min).

The higher the VO2 max, the higher your level of cardio fitness and endurance. As VO2 max improves, the same workout will begin feeling more effortless.

VO2 max is measured during cardio exercise testing, usually on a stationary bike or a treadmill. Thanks to the vast amount of scientific data, it can now also be estimated with some smartwatches.

The smartwatch assesses your VO2max by monitoring your heart rate and motion data during a brisk walk, hike, or outdoor run. The estimate is highly accurate and gives you a good idea of your cardio fitness.

Gentler Streak retrieves your VO2max when it’s available and incorporates it into your current condition description. For instance, when VO2max is in decline, you will get a message to tone down the activities and pay extra attention to how you feel. It’s good to keep an eye on it and act accordingly.

  •  VO2max estimates can be inaccurate when certain conditions or medications limit your heart rate.
